A 30-year-old man was shot dead in broad daylight on Saturday by three assailants in Gurgaon’s Sadar Bazaar area. Police said the man was sitting in his car when he was murdered.

According to police, CCTV cameras in the area captured the assailants fleeing the spot. The accused have been identified and police teams are conducting raids to arrest them. A murder case has been registered at Sadar Bazaar police station.

Police said the dead has been identified as Amit alias Gaurav Chauhan.

Five shots were fired at Chauhan and three bullets hit his head. Police have also recovered three empty cartridges and a loaded magazine with five rounds from the spot.

Police said Chauhan was a history-sheeter. He was jailed in 2004 and 2006 in attempt to murder and extortion cases in Delhi and Gurgaon. Chauhan belonged to one “Sandeep Gang” — which operated in Gurgaon — and was on the wanted list for illegal supply of diesel generators to Gurgaon vendors.

“Chauhan was involved in the illegal business of supplying electricity through diesel generators in  Sadar Bazaar over the last few years. Another gang was also operating the same business. So, it is possible his rivals murdered him,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Kumar said.

According to preliminary investigation, Chauhan rushed to Sadar Bazaar after he was informed that someone was disconnecting his generators and providing new connections to vendors in order to take over his business. “This could have been a trap. We are investigating the matter further,” a police officer said.

Chauhan hailed from Haryana’s Jhajjar district. He had been living in Acharya Puri, Gurgaon, for the last few years.

Police said the body was handed over to his family on Saturday after the autopsy.  His family took the body to the village for cremation.
