A tutor, who made it to the civil services while undergoing life imprisonment for raping a student, was granted a new lease of life on Wednesday, with the Delhi High Court reducing his term to five-and-a-half years, already served, and noting that the convict has “redeemed” himself in jail.

Ashok Rai,alias Amit, was convicted on the charge of raping his 21-year old student, who committed suicide later. The court, however, took note of the fact that the Rai studied in the jail and cracked the civil services exam, and ruled that the jail term served would meet the ends of justice.

“Rai has redeemed himself in jail, evidenced by the fact that he took his civil service examinations and qualified for the IAS. We are of the opinion that the sentence already served would meet the ends of justice,” said a Division Bench headed by Justice Pradeep Nandrajog. The Bench, however, upheld the charge of rape against Rai. The prosecution had alleged that the victim had consented to an intimate relationship with the accused after he had made the false promise of marrying her.
