HC pulls up private hospitals for denying treatment to poor

The High Court on Wednesday sought a response from 12 private hospitals for their failure to comply with its previous order to give free treatment to poor patients.

The High Court on Wednesday sought a response from 12 private hospitals for their failure to comply with its previous order to give free treatment to poor patients. A bench of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw issued notices to hospitals,including Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre,Moolchand Hospital and St Stephen’s Hospital,seeking their replies by August 30. The court was hearing a plea seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against these hospitals for their failure to comply with the March 22,2007,order. The court had ordered the hospitals to reserve 25 per cent of their out-patient department service and 10 per cent beds for free treatment of the poor.
