The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has often found itself in the centre of controversy for naming roads after relatives of various politicians. The civic agency, therefore, recently claimed that it will be more strict while deciding on proposed names.

The claim turned hollow when the Naming and Renaming Committee of the MCD recently renamed a road after the father of a Delhi Cabinet minister.

The road in question is Hamdard Marg, which has been renamed as Late Mohd Yusuf Marg — the father of Delhi Power Minister Haroon Yusuf.

The road between Chowk Farsh Khana and Hauz Qazi leads to Hamdard Dawakhana.

The renaming proposal was passed in a recent meeting of the Naming and Renaming Committee.

Mayor Rajni Abbi said the committee passes most of the proposals made by the councillor and supported by the assistant engineer of the area.

“We cleared the proposal in the last meeting. The proposal was moved by a councillor. I have to look into the reports filed by the assistant and superintendent engineers,as they are responsible for telling us whether the road already has a name. We will look into the matter,” said Abbi, chairperson of the Naming and Renaming Committee.

She said if residents have objections, the decision to rename the roads could be reversed.

The Hamdard Foundation, meanwhile, has moved court over the decision.

“Hakim Abdul Hameed founded Hamdard National Foundation,an NGO for social welfare. It is a registered society with the objective of channelising the profits of Hamdard Waqf Laboratories to healthcare, education and social welfare. We do not want to go into the details of the Power Minister’s father. It is unfair to us,and we have a case pending in a Patiala House court regarding the issue,” said an official of Hamdard University.

Haroon Yusuf said he has been informed the decision. “I have received the news that MCD has renamed the road after my father,” he said.
