A 58-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a four-year-old mute girl a day earlier.
According to police, the incident took place between 10 am and 2 pm in Gurgaon’s Ghangola village, where both the accused and the girl reside.
The girl, whose parents are labourers, was playing in her locality when he lured her into his home under the pretext of giving her sweets, said police.
Jagdish, who works as a carpenter, lived in the house with his wife, but she had gone out at the time, said police, adding that he also has a married daughter and a son studying in Delhi.
“He tempted the girl into his home and then sexually assaulted her,” said sub-inspector Meena, the investigating officer (IO) of the case.
The girl’s mother panicked when she noticed her daughter was missing, and started looking for her in the area. She saw the girl coming out of Jagdish’s home, crying, Meena said.
Meena said the victim narrated her ordeal to her mother through gestures and the latter registered a case at Sohna Police Station under Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act and relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
“The accused was arrested from his home and produced in court on Tuesday. He has been sent to Bhondsi jail,” said Mukesh Kumar, the station house officer of Sohna Police Station.
The SI added that the victim has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering.
