GREEN PARK: Assailants arrive in Santro,Honda Accord l Guns open up l 5 flee,4 in AIIMS l 3 cops injured
Four armed,dreaded and desperate criminals were arrested following a 15-minute gunfight on Monday afternoon between the police and the gang,intercepted on the way before they could rob banks in upmarket Green Park area of South Delhi.
The four are admitted in AIIMS; two are stated to be critical.
While five other criminals managed to give the police a slip and escaped in a separate car,two of them went to a TV news channel and surrendered later in the evening (see report alongside).
Three policemen received minor injuries in the encounter.
The area where the encounter took place is sandwiched between a clinic and a primary school and the four criminals were cornered in their car (Honda Accord),the police said. Four imported automatic pistols,two knives,several cellphones and two big bags were seized from the foursome,the police said.
According to DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal,15 policemen from Lodhi Road along with the anti-theft squad laid a trap after Lodhi Road SHO Inspector Rajender Singh received a tip-off.
According to information,they were to assemble in South Extension and leave for Green Park to rob a bank, DCP Dhaliwal said. As expected,the gang leader,Satya Prakash,arrived at McDonalds in South Ex-II on a motorcycle with one Shakeel. They had a sandwich there and left for RK International Hotel,where they parked their bike outside.
Soon,two others,identified as Sonu (alias Kuldeep Singh) and Nader arrived in a Honda Accord car and picked up Prakash and Shakeel. Their destination Green Park was zeroed in because several banks HDFC,ING Vysya and Allahabad Bank had opened shop recently and were still to upgrade their security,a police source said.
They had reportedly planned to rob any one of these banks around 4 pm.
According to police,five other associates arrived in another car (Santro) just when the police team had cornered the Accord. While occupants of the Santro sped off towards Aurobindo Marg,the police team stopped the Honda Accord near gate number 2 of Green Park Extension. Weapons drawn and donning bulletproof jackets,the cops surrounded the car the criminals opened fire at this point.
Constables Suresh,Umesh and Kaushalender received minor injuries.
With the arrests,the police claimed to have solved the robberies at Samaipur Badli bank,GK,RK Puram cash van,Anand Vihar cash van and the break-in at Malviya Nagar. Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal has announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone providing information.
