A week after the Delhi Traffic Police distributed more than 17,500 coupons to those using foot overbridges as a part of a road safety drive,a lucky draw was conducted at India Gate on Wednesday. Purshottam,a security guard, became the first to win a prize money of Rs 5,000 for using a foot overbridge.
The lot was drawn by a five-year-old girl to ensure transparency in procedure. The chit that she picked had the guards name. He was not present at the spot as he must not have thought that he will win the prize money. We later contacted him and congratulated him, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
Purshottam was on his way back home on Saturday evening, when he was given the coupon for having used the foot overbridge at Bhogal.
He became the first person to have received the prize money. Everybody is trying to contact him and he is having his share of fame. We told him to come and collect his prize around 12 noon tomorrow, but he was so excited and said he will reach by 10 am, Garg said.
The motive of the campaign was to persuade more pedestrians to follow road safety measures and also increase patronage of foot overbridges. The Traffic Police have found that FOBs are not used frequently and are trying to promote their usage in an effort to ensure pedestrian safety.
According to police, using FOBs will help bring down pedestrian fatalities. This city has to come up with a culture in which pedestrian security is respected. For this, usage of FOBs,subways and footpaths has to be promoted. This drive has encouraged many to take FOBs, Garg said.
