Oscar-nominated actor and Kenyan-born star of breakout film 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong’o, has turned countless heads on the red carpet with her striking good looks and her sublime sense of style. With designers scrambling to dress her, and fashion critics swooning over her ensemble choices, the 30-year-old has already been christened fashion’s “It” girl. Donning solid shapes and clean lines in primary colours that flatter her glowing skin, Nyong’o obviously knows what works for her.
From her Golden Globes appearance in a red-caped Ralph Lauren ensemble, a turquoise Gucci gown at the SAG Awards, to her most recent Bafta Awards appearance in a emerald green Christian Dior gown, Nyong’o has had a brilliant run so far. While many have likened her red-carpet rise to that of Freida Pinto — designers and stylists took an instant liking to the Indian model after her debut in Slumdog Millionaire in 2008 — Nyong’o says she is simply having fun. “You have to wear something to these events, so I wore things, and people took to them. It was not my agenda at all! But I’m flattered that everyone is digging my style,” she told Vulture. And now having landed Miu Miu’s Spring 2014 campaign, bigger things are in store for her. We can’t wait to see what Nyong’o will wear to the Academy Awards on March 2.
An Exotic Affair
Natasha Nischol and Virginia Holmes’ make-up company Fat Mu is not new to international affiliations. Nischol, a London College of Fashion graduate, and Holmes, who trained at the Greasepaint School for Make-up in London, have worked on prestigious foreign and Indian projects such as Slumdog Millionaire, Zero Dark Thirty, Paa, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Luck By Chance. The latest Hollywood film to join their burgeoning portfolio is John Madden’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2. The film starring Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Richard Gere and Dev Patel, will see Fat Mu working with Bafta and Emmy-nominated make-up designer Daniel Phillips. With films such as The Queen, The Duchess, Jane Eyre and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), under his belt, Phillips has been an inspiration, says Holmes. “We are very lucky to get this opportunity to work with one of UK’s biggest make-up designers. Not only is Phillips an amazing make-up and hair designer, he also happens to be a very calm, humble and positive person,” says Holmes.
