An eight-year-old boy is battling serious injuries to his wind pipe at Lok Nayak Hospital after his father slashed his throat with a blade.

The boy,who was admitted to the hospital on August 8,has undergone surgery for reconstruction of his larynx, which houses the vocal cords.

It’s a heart-rending sight as the boy lies on a hospital bed, with a series of tubes inserted into his throat and nose. There is no family member by his side; only a constable and some hospital staff.

Police said the father was now behind bars for the attack and the boy’s mother had allegedly married someone else. The boy’s father attacked him as the man was depressed after his wife allegedly eloped with another man, police said.

When the boy wishes to move,he signals by winking or shaking his feet. “The hospital authorities are taking care of the child. Nurses take care of his medicine, food and other needs. He becomes very restless at times and it is difficult to understand what he wants as he cannot talk. As there are no family members to look after him,we are treating him like our own child,” a hospital official said.

According to doctors treating him,the child’s condition is stable but he has been kept under observation. “The basic repair of the wind pipe has been done and he has been kept under observation. The cut on his neck was very deep, which led to a lot of blood loss. He is presently on fluids,” a doctor in the team that carried out the surgery said.

Police said they tried to contact the boy’s mother but have got no response. “The father has been sent to judicial custody for attempt to murder. After slitting his son’s throat with a blade,he tried to slash his wrist. He told us that he wanted to eliminate his family after his wife eloped with another man. We are verifying the facts. As of now,we are worried about the child,” a police officer said.
