Known for designing a range of stunning evening wear — including gowns for several beauty pageants — not many would know that Mandira Wirk has a sporty streak. She has competed at state-level skating, besides representing her school and college in basketball. This year, she combines her love for sports with fashion to create the look for the grid girls at the Airtel Indian Grand Prix 2013. “I have combined comfort with smart design for the uniform,” says Wirk, who has come up with trendy trench coats as part of the ensemble. “I have made these uniforms out of silk jersey which is a stretchable fabric. The trench coat silhouette is in keeping with the fall/ winter trend and I have added a belt, some buttons and a lapel to lend a touch of the formal. The resulting outfit — set in red and white and paired with a red scarf and wedges — makes for a sporty style statement,” says the Delhi-based designer. The challenge was to come up with a design that balanced comfort with glamour, not to mention selecting 54 grid girls from nationwide auditions. “I came up with a total of 18 sketches out of which the trench silhouette was chosen,” says Wirk.
