Farmers, under the aegis of Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (KMS),blocked the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) flyway on Monday and forced toll operators to allow vehicles to ply without paying toll.

They ended their protest after the district administration and the toll management urged farmers to end their demonstration and participate in discussion of issues.

Farmers protest at the toll plaza and forced the operator to open the gates from 10 am to 11 am on Monday, allowing hundreds of vehicles to pass without paying toll while activists shouted slogans against the Samajwadi Party government in Lucknow.

“We have given the management a period of 15 days to address the demands, after which we will intensify our protest,” Dhirendra Singh,a farmer leader, said. During the protest,a large police force was present to prevent any incidents of violence. The farmers alleged that toll being charged on the flyway was arbitrary and the regular hiking of free was “unacceptable”.

“The cost of the DND flyway has been recovered. Yet,they continue to charge toll. It’s a public road and it should be made toll-free,” Singh said.

The protesters have sent a memorandum to Sanjay Chauhan, the Noida City Magistrate, which asks the operators to make the profits of the Noida Toll Booth Company Ltd (NTBCL) public.

They also demanded that the DND flyway be made free for women, senior citizens and students — while other commuters be given free passage during peak hours.

NTBCL officials said they were yet to receive the demands while the district administration said it would convene a meeting to discuss the demands made by farmers.
