The second round of auctioning of fancy vehicle registration numbers fetched the Delhi government Rs 66,30,000 Tuesday, an eight per cent dip from the Rs 72,40,000 it fetched in the first round of auctioning.

While the number ‘0001’ fetched the Transport department Rs 12.5 lakh in the first round, the second round fetched the department only Rs 5,30,000 for the same number. Officials cited the festive season in October as one of the reasons why the first round saw a larger bid than the second round.

The number ‘0007’ incidentally saw a larger bid at Rs 7,50,000 as compared to Rs 5,50,000 in the first round.

The inaugural e-auction began on October 10 and even as the department hoped to earn at least Rs one crore, the total touched only approximately Rs 73 lakh. The department hopes for increased participation in the future auctions.

Explaining the process, a transport official said the bidding normally takes place for 140 VIP numbers where 140 numbers are auctioned per round. However, there are only a few numbers that are favourite among bidders. This time incidentally, the number ‘1313’ was added to the list of numbers to be auctioned. The number finally went for a final bid of Rs 1 lakh.

Officials said the auction will go on every month since there are numbers that have not been given out for years.
