The Transport department is planning to launch the auctioning of fancy number plates by September-end. The proposal has been sent to Lieutenant-Governors office for approval and the final publication on the process of getting these number plates will be issued thereafter. Premium numbers will be auctioned off at a base price ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 5 lakh. Sources said the auctioning software has been designed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and has been tested extensively.
The number plates will be divided into five categories with a base price for each. The Transport department will announce the registration numbers, which will be put up for sale at the beginning of each fortnight. Each bidder will have to first deposit a reserve price. They will then be given a password to participate in the bidding of the number which will be sent through e-mail or mobile.
If the final payment is not made by the bidder, the deposit amount will not be returned, an official said.
