Responding to the attack on a member of their fraternity allegedly by the builder mafia, about 250 of the 600 engineers on MCDs pay roll went on indefinite strike on Thursday. The engineers said they were protesting the lack of security cover, especially during demolition drives to raze illegal structures.
We have told our seniors that our lives are in danger when we go for demolition drives. We have demanded security cover during such times. We will not join work till our demands are met, said Feroz,Joint Secretary of the MCD Engineers Association.
MCD sources said one of the reasons why engineers still face security issues is non-implementation of the Municipal Commissioners order, asking zones to form separate teams of engineers for detecting and razing illegal structures in the Capital.
Assuring protection to engineers,Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra said,There ought to be better security for the officers who are in-charge sensitive tasks. Protection will be given to these engineers so that similar incidents are not repeated.
The civic chief said MCD will provide monetary help to the injured MCD engineer Ansar Alam, who is recuperating at a hospital after the assault. I have spoken to the Police Commissioner. They are investigating the matter and have assured action against the guilty, Mehra said.
A senior official of the Engineering department said shortage of staff was one of the key reasons affecting MCDs performance.
We have written to the authorities several times, but the request of hiring engineers has not been taken up yet. We are seriously short staffed, said Additional Commissioner,Engineering,Manish Gupta.
Meanwhile, the attack on Alam was debated in the Standing Committee of MCD.
