A 44-year-old software engineer was shot and injured by two men on a motorcycle after he tried to foil their bid to snatch a gold chain from his relative in the Noida Sector-50 on Friday night.

Police said Ashish Jain was shot in the shoulder. In the melee that ensued, the two men abandoned their motorcycle and fled. Police have detained a person for questioning after a combing operation in villages nearby.

A senior police officer said the incident took place around 11.30 pm on Friday. “Jain, his two daughters, his sister-in-law Simpi Jain and her two-year-old son were returning from a temple in the locality. Two men on a bike pulled up next to them and tried to snatch Simpi’s gold chain. Jain managed to push both accused off the bike. At that point, one of them took out a pistol and fired at Jain. They then abandoned their motorbike and fled,” a senior officer said.

The officer said one person had been detained from Hoshiarpur village and further investigations are under way.

“A case has been lodged under appropriate sections of the IPC. Additionally, we have found that the motorbike they used was also stolen a few days ago. This has been added to the FIR. Jain is recuperating at Kailash Hospital,” he said.
