Eight persons reportedly drowned in the Yamuna in three separate incidents during the Ganesh visarjan ceremony in Outer Delhi on Wednesday evening.

In the first incident,reported from Burari,the PCR received a call around 2.45 pm informing them that a man,identified as Gappu lal (45),a resident of Nathupura,accidentally slipped and drowned in the Yamuna.

“Lal along with other devotees were singing and dancing near the bank. The group then immersed the idol in the water and Lal went a little ahead to ensure that it was properly immersed. He lost his balance and went under water. He could not be rescued by those who had gathered there. Lal’s body was not found till late evening,” an officer said.

In the second incident,reported from Wazirabad,around 4.45 pm,five persons — Rajesh (25),Toshi (28),Rahul (31),Kala (31) and Yogesh (20)— all residents of Madipur,reportedly drowned during the immersion ceremony. Their bodies too are yet to be found,police said.

The third incident was reported from Kudesia Ghar around 4.15 pm. Three persons slipped and fell in the water. Though one of them,Kamal (18),was rescued, two others,Sunny (22) and Bharat,are feared drowned.
