A month after IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal was suspended, reportedly for demolishing the wall of a masjid in Kadalpur during Ramzan, the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar,Ravi Kant Singh, was transferred late Tuesday night. Hira Lal Gupta, who was holding charge as DM,Unnao, will take charge on Thursday.

In the aftermath of the demolition of the wall in Kadalpur,Singh had submitted a report to the state government, where he had absolved Nagpal of any wrongdoing. The report had said that the villagers of Kadalpur, upon being told that requisite permission had not been taken for the masjid, had brought down the the wall on their own,and no demolotion machines were put into operation.

On July 27,Nagpal,who had launched a fierce drive against illegal sand mining in the district, oversaw the demolition of the wall. The site, however, was on gram sabha land, where according to regulations,no religious site can be constructed without permission. After the suspension, there was a political furore. “The transfer was inevitable. However,it seems the immediate trigger for the transfer was the violence in Sorkha village on Tuesday during an anti-encroachment drive,” an official said.
