The director and chief operations officer of an online shopping portal were arrested for cheating several customers of several lakhs of rupees. They have been accused of not delivering items purchased from their website despite receiving payment for the goods.
Arindam Bose (47),the director of timatara.com,and his associate Harish Ahluwalia (35),were arrested from Sector-63,Noida,on Friday after police received over 200 complaints from across the country.
The victims claimed that they had paid money online through credit cards for various items like mobile phones,cameras and pen drives. However,in-spite of repeated requests,the goods never arrived, S D Mishra,Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW),said.
The company,in fact,shut down their front office in Sector-8,Noida,and changed their location to avoid detection and confrontation with the customers they had cheated,police said.
Police said,the online retail website claimed to sell various products like cameras,mobile phones,and home appliances.
Investigations have revealed that the portal was actively involved in fraud. Many have been cheated on the pretext of providing cheap products. Most of the victims were lured by misleading advertisements,high discount offers and false representations on the website,police said.
Bose,a native of Kolkata,has a BTech in Electronics from Jadavpur University and has worked as an information technology professional for firms in India and abroad,police said.
He started timtara.com in 2010 with three others,Mishra said.
Ahluwalia,police said,belongs to Kaithal,Haryana. A graduate,he began his career with M/s BUZZ Mobiles. He joined timtara.com in 2012.
Police said efforts are on to trace the other directors of the company.
