He may be best known for his work on stage, but Akarsh Khurana has a fair amount of experience in the film industry too. At the helm of theatre group Akvarious Productions, Khurana has penned films such as Krrish and Krrish 3 and more recently, the screenplay for Sajid Khan’s Humshakals. He has also worked as a casting director and is an occasional actor. But with his latest project for the big screen, Khurana is expanding on his previous roles as he turns director.
A dramedy, Khurana’s directorial debut has Rajkummar Rao in the lead. The actor, who recently won a National Award for his titular role in Shahid, is currently wrapping up Dolly ki Doli, an Arbaaz Khan production with Sonam Kapoor in the lead.
The film has been produced by Khurana’s long-time friend, filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar’s Getaway Films. The first-time director, who is currently workshopping for the film that he begins shooting later this month, did not wish to reveal much about the film.
He said that the germ of the idea had come from Nambiar many years ago. “We had partly developed it but didn’t see it through at that time. But when Bejoy said he’d like me to direct a film, I told him I’d like to pursue that idea if he wasn’t making a film on it,” Khurana explains. Titled Focus, it revolves around three characters and has theatre actors Shernaz Patel, Aakash Khurana — the director’s father and veteran actor — and Hussain Dalal, also the dialogue writer of the film, in key roles.
