A 50-year-old woman and her two daughters were found with their necks slit in their house in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur area Sunday evening.

The bodies were found after neighbours complained of a foul stench coming from the house located at Brahmpuri Main Road. The main door was bolted from the outside and had to be forced open, said police. The deceased have been identified as Sayara and her two daughters Mehrunnissa (19) and Shabnam (9). The bodies of the siblings were recovered from the first floor while their mother’s body was found on the second floor of the three-storey house. Their necks had been slit and signs of trauma on their necks and arms, said sources.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajit Kumar Singla told The Indian Express that prima facie it is suspected to be a case of personal enmity. “It seems to be a case of personal enmity but we are investigating from all angles,” he said.

Sources said there was no sign of forced entry and there was a possibility of more than one attacker, adding that there were signs of a scuffle having taken place inside the rooms.

A neighbor said none of the family members had been seen for around three days. “The attacker after killing them, locked the house from the outside. None of us heard any kind of commotion,” said a neighbour.

Sayara’s husband Aslam alias Munna had died two years ago and she lived with her daughters on the first and second floor of the building. The ground floor had been rented out but the tenants were not present when their bodies were discovered, said sources.

Crime and forensics teams have visited the spot and collected samples. Police have questioned some relatives and neighbours of Sayara. A case of murder has been registered at New Usmanpur police station.
