The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr in the early hours of Wednesday, police said. One person sustained injuries.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Circle Officer, Anupshahr, Ramkaran said the incident took place between 5.15 am and 5.30 am, when the family of six was returning from a wedding in Chamanpura village, Badaun district, in their CNG-powered car to their home in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar.
“Prima facie, it appears that the driver of the car may have fallen asleep at the wheel… Since it was the early hours of Wednesday, there weren’t many people on the road. A resident of the area informed the SHO, Jahangirabad Police Station, about the accident, and soon the police reached the spot,” he said.
Station House Officer, Jahangirabad, Mahendra Tripathi, said, “The moment the family reached Chandauka roundabout near Anupshahr, their Swift car hit the median on the bridge and overturned, and soon caught fire. We are investigating the reasons behind the blaze.”
The deceased have been identified as Tanveez Ahmad; Nida, 14; Momina, 24; Zainul, 2; and Zubair Ali. “We have sent their bodies for post-mortem examinations and have informed the families,” the SHO said.
The injured woman, Tripathi said, was identified as Gulnaaz. She was admitted to the Community Health Centre at Jahangirabad for treatment and was later referred to the Bulandshahr district hospital.
“She is currently out of danger,” he added.
