A 33-year-old constable of Delhi Police’s Special Cell allegedly shot himself dead accidentally during an arrest operation on Wednesday morning in Outer Delhi’s Rohini area.

The victim, Anand Khatri, died after his AK-47 rifle went off, with the bullet hitting him under the chin, said police. According to the police, Khatri was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital , where he succumbed to injuries.

The incident took place at 5.45 am when a team of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell surrounded house number 11 in Rohini sector 21 to arrest the accused, Ashok alias Sonu.

Khatri was on the roof to cut off the suspect’s escape route. Police said the suspect was eventually arrested after a lot of resistance.

“After the suspect was taken into custody, Khatri tried to jump from the rooftop, but he slipped and lost his balance. His gun was loaded and he was accidentally shot,” said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell who was also present on the spot. He added that the bullet hit him under the chin before he fell down.

Yadav said Khatri had joined the special cell three months ago and was posted in the southwest cell of the anti-terrorist unit. He was earlier with the traffic police since 2007.

He had also undergone a commando course in 2007 and sources said this was one of the reasons for inducting him in the special cell of the Delhi Police.

Meanwhile, the district police have initiated an inquest proceeding under section 174 of CrPC. According to the locals, the house belonged to a man named Pushpender who owned a shop and supplied wholesale building material in the area.

“The accused had moved into the house with his family three days ago and we are investigating the matter. We have also questioned the owner of the house for possible leads,” said Vikramjit Singh, DCP, Outer.

Ashok alias Sonu is suspected to be a member of the Manjeet Mahal and Ravinder gang. He has a police record dating back to over 11 years. He was arrested in 2014 for the first time in a case of assault and was later convicted for the same.

In 2009, he was arrested in Sector 23-Dwarka in a case of vehicle theft. In the same year, he, along with Virender alias Kala and Surender alias Monu — both residents of Isserheri village in Jhajjar, Haryana — allegedly conspired and killed Rahul and Sado Ram, over personal rivalry.

In 2015 he, along with his associates Pradeep Solanki alias Kala, allegedly stole a car from Sector-23, Dwarka.

The duo, along with Pradeep alias Tota, also allegedly stole another car in Dwarka North. In March, Ashok along with Pradeep had allegedly threatened and later on fired at the office of Chandra Prakash Kuhswaha in Uttam Nagar area. They allegedly set the house of the victim afire.

In July, 2015, he had allegedly robbed another car from Gurgaon, Haryana.
