Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken believes that Delhi can either remain a national capital or get statehood. “If Delhi wants to have full-statehood it would cease to be the national capital. I would not want that to happen. Moreover, no other national capital in the world has power of police and land,” Maken said.
Watch what else is making news:
He said that being the national capital, Delhi was enjoying much more privileges, which it may lose after getting status of a state. “We have got several Central Universities, state government spends only 14 percent for metro, the annual budget Delhi police alone Rs. 6,300 – which among other expenses is borne by rest of the country as it is the national capital. Delhi will lose these privileges if it lets go it status as the national capital,” Maken said.
The Congress leader added that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was just playing politics over the issue. “If Arvind Kejriwal for his own ambitions (political) wants to give Delhi a full-state, then people of Delhi may suffer after it loses the privilege as the national capital,” Maken said.
Maken decried AAP and Kejiwal spending Delhi’s financial resources for advertisement in other states. “Before Kejriwal came to power the total budget on advertisement was Rs. 14.50 crore, which he increased Rs. 127 crore in the first year and second year Rs. 207 crore which sums upto an increase of 900 percent. Kejriwal is spending the Delhi taxpayers money all over the country (election bound states) to fulfill his own political ambition – which is again another form of corruption,” Maken said.
