Delay in razing wall costs 4 lives

Structure was to be demolished on Wednesday,cops hunt for absconding owner.

Four children were killed when the wall of an under-construction building fell from a height of nearly 50 feet in South Delhi’s Chattarpur Extension area on Sunday. Police have arrested the builder,and a search is on to nab the building owner.

The incident occurred around 11.30 am at Suman Colony,when Gaurav (11),Divya (9),Monu (10) and Nitin (10) were playing carrom in the courtyard. “While Gaurav died immediately,the other three succumbed while being taken to the hospital,” said a police officer.

Police said the builder,Sandeep Saini from Khirki Extension,and an accomplice,Saleem,have been arrested. The owner,Baldev Singh,who hails from Punjab and owns about 2,500 sq yards in the locality,is absconding.

Beside the bloodstained bricks sat an inconsolable Meenakshi,mourning the deaths of her two children. “I have lost both my children in this incident. I had put the clothes out to dry,and gone into the house for a bath when I heard the crash. What’s the point of living anymore?” she said.

Meenakshi’s husband Dharampal works as a waiter at a restaurant in Mehrauli. “We had sold our house in Mehrauli to pay for our children’s medical bills,” said Meenakshi. Hailing from Punjab,she has been living in the area for the last five years.

Monu’s father,Vinod Tiwari,works as an autorickshaw driver. Nitin’s father,Arvind,is a DTC bus driver.

DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said,“A case has been registered under Section 304 and 288 of the IPC.”
