A 28-year-old domestic help working for Rajya Sabha MP Kumari Selja was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of the husband of another help. The husband, Sanjay, was found dead near the servants’ quarters in the MP’s residence on Motilal Nehru Marg.
According to police, the cook, Anil Yadav, was having an affair with Sanjay’s wife. “Anil, who used to cook and perform small chores in Kumari Selja’s house, has been arrested on charges of murder and destruction of evidence. He had a scuffle with Sanjay on Sunday night and pushed him off the roof of the servants’ quarters. Police are questioning the staff,” Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) M K Meena said.
Police said Sanjay and Anil had got into a spat over the issue earlier too. On Sunday, police said, Sanjay and his family had gone to visit their relatives for rakhi. After they returned to the quarters around 10 pm, Anil had a spat with Sanjay. Police said Anil then beat up Sanjay. The injury marks on Sanjay’s face suggested that the two had serious fight, police said.
While he was being beaten up, Sanjay tried to flee and ran up the stairs of the servants’ quarters. Anil followed him and caught up with Sanjay on the terrace. During a scuffle there, Anil pushed Sanjay off the roof, police said. Police said Sanjay died due to severe bleeding.
According to police, both Sanjay and Anil were drunk at the time of the incident. Officers said while Sanjay had drank at his relative’s place, Anil had been drinking in his office.
According to police, Sanjay’s body was discovered by his wife around 7 am on Monday. A PCR call was made at 8 am. Police are still awaiting Sanjay’s post-mortem report.
Though only Anil, who hails from Madhubani, Bihar, has been arrested, others staffers at the MP’s residence are being questioned. Sanjay’s wife has not been given a clean-chit yet, Meena said.
Meena refused to comment on whether Selja was being questioned in the case and if she was at her residence at the time of the incident.
