Eight persons were injured in a cylinder blast in Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) on Mandir Marg on Tuesday morning. They were taken to Lady Hardinge Hospital and discharged after first aid.

According to police, the cylinder was in the LHMC staff quarters when it burst at 3 am on Tuesday.

“Eight residents sustained injuries and we took them to the hospital. A case of causing hurt and endangering safety has been registered at Mandir Marg police station,” a senior police officer said.

The staff quarters complex is occupied by class IV LHMC employees. Residents said they heard a loud blast from garage number 127.

“The blast broke doors and shattered windows of most houses. Even the walls developed cracks,” said Rakesh, who has been working with LHMC for the past 25 years.

His daughter Preeti (22),who works with a private firm in Karkardooma, was among those injured. She was asleep when the explosion took place. She suffered a fracture in her hand and leg.

“There was a blast and I saw fire all around. I wanted to help my family exit the house but I could not move my feet. The pain was enormous,” she said.

Officials from the disaster management team, who had arrived at the spot to take cognisance of the damage, said they would submit a report to the district commissioner. “A report has also been called for from the police and fire department to fix responsibility for the incident and take appropriate action,” the officer said.
