Refusing to issue another deadline for the work left unfinished under the CP redevelopment project,New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Monday claimed that the work was almost complete.
Another of the many deadlines for the project expired on June 30,with much of the work still incomplete despite NDMC repeatedly claiming that they would not miss the deadline.
An official statement released by the civic body stated that all important works had been completed. It stated the Connaught Place project consisted of four parts facade restoration, surface area development that includes parking area, public plaza, service corridor in middle circle, and upgradation of existing subways and construction of new ones in outer circle.
Officials claimed that the facade restoration work was complete in 14 blocks, including Regal and P blocks. But,this reporter visited Connaught Place (CP) and found that stone laying at the pavements opposite the Regal Block was still in progress.
Asked if another deadline was required to take care of the nitty-gritties of the project, officials said that the remaining work would be will be within the next 10 days. The unfinished work also involves setting up of new escalators at subways.
The NDMC statement stated that special lights had been provided in CPs corridors as well as on facade. It said concrete road along with redstone footpath had been laid in the middle circle to bring out CPs heritage look. Surface area development had also been completed in all the blocks, the statement said.
Twenty public toilet blocks have been set up. For the first time in India,a 1.2-km-long service corridor-utility duct facility has been complete, the statement said.
But officials admitted that telecom lines would be completed later as telecom companies would bear the expense of laying the wires. Communication lines are yet to be completed as telecom companies have to approach NDMC to install their cables underground, an official said.
Connaught Place has total of seven subways,of which two are new. Of the old ones, two are to remain without subways. The NDMC stated that escalators had been placed at the existing subways at Super Bazaar,K G Marg and Janpath. The two new subways at Gopal Das Building and Statesman House have also escalators.
When this reporter visited the K G Marg subway, two of its escalators were found to be non operational.
