here was little joy this Christmas for a Christian family in Madangir. Instead, they spent it answering questions from the police about a boy from the family who is among the four juveniles held for the shooting inside courtroom 73 at Karkardooma District Court on Wednesday.

Worse still for the family, the police suspect the boy led the gang of four “juvenile contract killers” targeting gangster Irfan, said sources. The shooters injured Irfan, but killed head constable Ram Kunwar Meena of Delhi Armed Police 3rd Battalion who was escorting him.

The minor’s maternal uncle, who works as a senior assistant in a law firm, attended to Ambedkar Nagar police station personnel even as he received customary Christmas greetings over phone.

He said the boy had brought disgrace to the family and added that his life had turned miserable in the last two days. “We are not like him (the accused). Why is the police harassing us? My reputation is in tatters,” he said. He said police had detained and questioned the boy’s father, who runs a small handloom business.
He said the boy’s parents did not get along so he spent most of his time with his maternal grandmother. The boy befriended a few local hooligans over the years, said the uncle. “In 2014 his elder brother and he were held for a murder in the area. His brother is serving jail term. He was released on bail.”

The boy’s uncle added, “When he was released, I requested him to move from this place and they went, but he never stopped meeting the locals here. I had disowned him then, but the fresh case has brought new troubles for the family.” He added, “The police are now looking for his cousin.”
