A delivery boy of a courier company was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stealing mobile phones from parcels. Police said Amaranth used to book cellphones online under a fictitious name and steal them when he was handed the package for delivery. He would then fill the package with stones and return it to the online portal marking the parcel as undelivered.
Amaranth was apprehended following investigations into a complaint filed by Ravi James, assistant manager of Aramex Company Pvt Ltd,a courier firm.
James approached the police on Saturday after he found that two parcels returned undelivered to the company had stones in them instead of mobile phones, said Chhaya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
Police said James checked a few parcels that had been returned to the firm and found the original packaging had been tampered with. He opened the parcels only to find that they contained stones instead of mobile phones. Similarly,10 other packets checked contained stones.
After checking details,James found that the parcels were given to Amaranth for delivery.
Amaranth told police that he booked these mobile phones online posing as customers residing in Badarpur and Sarita Vihar, which are his area of delivery. On his order, the mobile phones reached the courier company and were issued to him for delivery to the customers. He then stole the phones and replaced them with stones. He returned to his office with the boxes saying that they were undelivered, said Sharma.
Police have recovered the handsets from Amarnath.
