Councillor’s husband first MCOCA conviction in the capital

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Inderjeet Singh on Monday pronounced the sentence against 45-year-old Haji Afzal,husband of Jaffrabad ward Councillor Shakeela Begum.

In the first conviction in the capital under the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA),the husband of a sitting civic body councillor,chargesheeted in 19 separate cases,was sentenced to six years in jail and fined Rs 9 lakh.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Inderjeet Singh on Monday pronounced the sentence against 45-year-old Haji Afzal,husband of Jaffrabad ward Councillor Shakeela Begum.

Afzal has been chargesheeted in multiple cases for offences including criminal intimidation,trespass,kidnapping,assault,rioting,attempt to murder and murder between 1990 and 2006. In 2008,the Delhi Police had received approval of the proposal to register a case under the MCOCA.

The court had convicted Afzal on August 21,and imposed the sentence after hearing arguments on the issue of sentence on Monday. He has been convicted for being a member of an organised crime syndicate,and for holding property obtained through commission of organised crime.

Afzal,who contested the Delhi Assembly elections in 2008 as a BSP candidate,has been in custody since his arrest in October 2009.
