A 12-year-old boy was killed in an alleged celebratory firing case during a wedding celebration at Purani Chaupal in Mukherjee Nagar,Northwest Delhi, late on Sunday night.

Delhi Police Crime Branch constable Jai Baba (38) — the boy’s family alleged that he shot the child to seek revenge — has been arrested.

The family members claimed that the constable had an argument with one of their relatives over a parking issue earlier in the evening.

Police,meanwhile,called the case an “accident”.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Romil Baaniya said,“We are yet to ascertain whether the constable used his service pistol. He has been charged for murder under IPC Section 302. The constable was drunk at the time of incident.”

Police have recovered 9 mm cartridges from the spot and, therefore, suspect the constable used his service pistol for shooting.

Tarun Chauhan was a student of Class VII at a government school.

Constable Jai Baba and his colleague Sanjay came to the function along with one Vikas Chauhan, who was invited by the bride’s relative Manmeet.

Police said Jai Baba had parked his motorcycle in a lane, blocking the way of the baraat procession. A relative of the bride,Vinod Chauhan, asked the constable to remove his bike, which led to an argument.

“Eyewitnesses have told us that around 11.30 pm the constable,in a drunk state, was dancing on the dance floor. He pulled out a pistol and fired once in the air and then at the ground. He did not notice Tarun on the dance floor and the third shot hit the child in the chest,” said Baaniya. Jai Baba was issued his service pistol on February 22,police said.

The guests overpowered and beat up the constable, and later took him to the Mukherjee Nagar police station where a case was registered. Tarun was taken to Sushruta Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to injuries early Monday morning.

Jai Baba is from Maharashtra and joined the force 15 years ago. He came to the Crime Branch’s SOS Cell three years ago.

Police are looking for Manmeet and suspect he could be in possession of the pistol, which has not been recovered yet. Vikas Chauhan, who brought the constables to the function, has been detained for questioning.
