An Class VIII student committed suicide at her residence in Northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area on Tuesday night.

Police said her mother found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her room.

While the police suspect that the girl committed suicide in a state of depression after performing poorly in her examination, family members of the girl have alleged that she was being harassed by some men in the area.

The police said no suicide note was recovered from the spot. According to police, the girl’s mother approached the Khajuri Khas police station around 10 pm on Tuesday and informed police about the incident.

“In her complaint, the mother said her daughter had returned home on Tuesday afternoon and was depressed as her examination had not gone well. She was seen crying in her room. At night, the girl did not come for dinner and was later found hanging in her room,” a senior police officer investigating the case said.

She was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

However, the girl’s family alleged that she was being harassed for the past few days by some of the local men. Her brother,Ravi had reportedly picked up a fight with them recently, but they had in turn threatened him of dire consequences. This pushed the girl into depression, forcing her to take the extreme step, her family alleged.

Police denied having received any such complaint from the family. An inquest proceeding has been ordered into the matter.
