A 12-year-old boy died after he fell off the second floor of his school in Mayur Vihar,East Delhi,on Tuesday afternoon.

Varun Jain was a student of Class VI at Rishabh Public School in Mayur Vihar-I.

A case of negligence was registered after Jeevan Anmol Hospital, where the school authorities had taken the boy to,called the police around 1.30 pm.

“Varun’s teacher had accompanied the students to the gate after school hours to help them board their buses home. When he reached the gate,Varun realised he had forgotten a notebook in his classroom,” a senior police officer said.

Investigating officers, however, are clueless about what happened next. “We have been able to ascertain the fact that he tripped over the three-and-half-foot railing and fell. But whether he was pushed,or had jumped by himself or the death was an accident can be ascertained only after a post-mortem examination,” said the officer.

Jeevan Anmol Hospital referred Varun to Kailash Hospital in Noida, where he died during treatment.

“He sustained severe head injuries. He was brought to us at 4.30 pm and was pronounced dead at 5.49 pm. We notified the Sector 20 police station in Noida as per the protocol,” said the spokesperson for Kailash Hospital.

A post mortem will be conducted at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital on Wednesday.

At the mortuary, relatives blamed the school authorities for negligence. “They did take our child to the hospital. But that’s not where their duty ends. Why didn’t anyone accompany Varun to his classroom? Why was he left to himself? He has been in this school since Class I. The school authorities told us that the teachers were inside the staffroom and that there was no one else around at the time of the incident. How could they be so careless?” asked Mohit,Varun’s cousin.

Mohit said Varun’s parents have not been informed about the death yet. His father,Sanjay Jain, owns an electric goods store near his house in Pandav Nagar,East Delhi.

“A case of negligence has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station. The liabilities are being probed,” said Prabhakar,Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).
