Ahead of the monsoon,the three municipal corporations have geared up to prevent water-logging and curb the spread of diseases like malaria. The municipal corporations,in coordination with the other agencies,have set a June 15 deadline to complete the monsoon preparatory works.
The civic bodies are holding coordination meeting every fortnight with agencies like Slum and JJ Board,Public Works Department,Central Public Works Department,Delhi Development Authority,Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Delhi Jal Board.
On a priority basis,the municipal corporations are preparing a fresh list of flood-prone areas in the city. Since the PWD has taken over all the roads,which are more than 60-feet wide,we have started work to identify flood-prone areas. Also the desilting of nullahs have begun. The Engineering department has started making arrangements for carrying out patch repairs on roads, said Manish Gupta,Municipal Commissioner of South Corporation.
Gupta said a special plan has been chalked out for cleaning the debris in Barapullah nullah,which is a chronic water-clogging site. The entire stretch below the Barapullah flyover from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium till the Ring Road will be cleaned.
The corporations have also undertaken anti-larval measures to check mosquito breeding. The staff are inspecting residential areas and government offices. They have been designated to check one locality for a week to identify breeding sites, said Sajjan Singh Yadav,Municipal Commissioner of East Delhi Corporation.
We are also inspecting municipal buildings like schools,zonal offices,hospitals,dispensaries and staff quarters to identify if they need any repairs, said P K Gupta,Municipal Commissioner of North Delhi Corporation.
