A 23-year-old man allegedly jumped to death after he was caught stealing from a fifth floor flat of a residential complex, in south Delhi’s R K Puram on Saturday. The man had allegedly attacked the owner and his wife with a knife before jumping off the building. Police said the incident took place around 2.15 am. “The man, identified as Pawan Kumar, was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead. He was employed as a lift operator in the same building,” an officer said.

The flat owner, Ashok Rajput — who works as a chief engineer at the Ministry of Power — told police that he was sleeping when he heard a noise in his room. He found a man wearing a monkey cap and a pair of gloves, collecting articles in a bag.

On seeing Rajput, the man ran towards the balcony in a bid to escape. However, Rajput caught him. Kumar then whipped out a knife and attacked Rajput and his wife before jumping from the balcony, Rajput told police.

Kumar’s body has been sent for post-mortem, police said. Rajput and his wife were also treated in the hospital. Police suspect that Kumar had entered the house from the balcony. Further investigation is on, police said.
