A BSP councilor from Loni city council was shot dead right outside his house on Friday night. Police said Shaukeen Malik — who was serving his second term as councillor — was shot twice in the head and died on the way to Max Hospital in Patparganj. Police have arrested three of the four accused in the case.

Ghaziabad Police said the incident took place around 8.30 pm in Ashok Vihar area of Loni.

“Malik was sitting outside his house in the courtyard. A Maruti Swift slowed down next to his gate and three people opened fire. Four bullets hit Malik, two in his head. The car then sped way. Malik was first taken to GTB Hospital and then to Max Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Arvind Yadav said.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s brother, Shakil, four persons have been named in the FIR and  three of them were arrested on Saturday morning.

“There was a dispute between Malik and the accused over some land in Nithaura village. Four persons have been named in the FIR — Aman, his brother Chhotu, Rakesh, and Harendra. A search is on for Harendra. Further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer said.

Immediately after the shooting, residents of Ashok Vihar held protests outside the Loni police station and blocked traffic for over three hours.

Residents protested against the continued state of poor law and order in the area. Three years ago, another BSP councillor, Sachin Choudhary, was similarly shot and killed in Loni.
