A 13-year-old boy died after being hit by an RTV (mini bus) in southwest Delhi’s Palam area Monday afternoon, said police. The incident triggered outrage in the locality, with angry residents beating up the bus driver before handing him over to police.

According to police, the accident took place at 2 pm when the boy, identified as Rajiv, was returning home after playing with his friend in a park.

An eyewitness said Rajiv was crossing the road when the speeding RTV ran over him. Residents immediately gathered at the spot.

The boy was rushed to a government hospital where doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, a few persons caught hold the driver who was trying to escape and handed him over to police.

“We received a call and immediately sent a team to the spot. Locals vandalised the bus as well,” said a police officer.

The body has been sent for postmortem examination, said an officer.

A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Palam Village police station.
