A 13-year-old boy died after falling into a 15-feet deep pit at a Metro construction site in Karkardooma, East Delhi on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses told police that the boy, Kartik, was playing near the DMRC construction site with five of his friends at around 6 pm, when he fell into the pit which was filled with water, along with his friend.

While a passerby rescued Kartik’s friend with the help of labourers at the site, it took them time to rescue Kartik. Police said by the time he was rescued, Kartik had stopped breathing. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Residents alleged that the pit was filled with water by the contractor at the Metro construction site.

Following Kartik’s death, his family members shouted slogans at the site, alleging that the death had occurred due to negligence by DMRC authorities.

“Metro workers dug the pit and filled it with water. They use this water for their work. We had advised them to close the pit but they did not listen,” Kartik’s uncle Dinesh said.

Police said they are waiting for the postmortem report before they can take further action.

Kartik was a student of class VIII at a government school in East Delhi. He was the eldest son in the family, police said.
