The BJP on Sunday slammed the Congress for the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi, with rising crime against women in the last decade. A statement issued by the BJP said that cases of molestation have seen a “dramatic increase”, even after the December 16 gangrape.

“The cases of molestation of women saw dramatic rise from 653 in 2012 to 3,347 in 2013 — a whopping increase of over 412 per cent. A staggering 73,958 cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in 2013, up from 51,479 in the previous year,” the BJP said.

The BJP also slammed the Congress for “completely unutilising” the Nirbhaya fund of Rs 1,000 crore that was announced by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the aftermath of the December 16 gangrape case in 2012. The BJP alleged, “The Congress leaves no occasion to pay lip service to women’s empowerment while looking the other way when Congress women workers are harassed by male party members. How can it claim to provide security to the women of this country when it can’t even protect its women members from people within its ranks?”

The party also attacked the AAP for their inability to fulfill its promises on women’s security. “The AAP that went around shouting about the Mahila Surakasha Dals before Delhi elections did nothing substantial to fulfil its promises in this regard. The 49-day long Aam Aadmi Party government under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal has performed equally bad if not worse in the area of women security. The Danish gang rape case that shook the country was one of the many cases of rape that occurred during that period. In the first two months of this year, police registered 388 cases of rape,” the BJP said.
