Two men on a bike shot a 35-year-old employee of Amul and robbed him outside a bank in East Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Police have identified the victim as Amit Sharma, a resident of Johripur. Sharma’s condition is serious and he has been admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, police said.
“Sharma was going to deposit money at Punjab National Bank, Johripur, in Karawal Nagar. He was carrying around Rs five lakh in cash. The assailants shot him, stole the bag and rode off,” an officer said.
Police are inspecting the bank’s CCTV footage and the surrounding area to identify the accused.
“He was employed at the Amul dairy outlet in Johripur extension. His job was to deposit cash earned at the outlet over the day, at the PNB branch in the area. On Saturday, Sharma set out to deposit the money…On the way, two men on a bike shot him in the hip, snatched his bag and fled,” Devendra Sharma, the victim’s relative said.
Witnesses telephoned Devendra, who reached the spot immediately and rushed Sharma to the hospital. A PCR call was made at around one pm, Devendra said. On being aksed the reason behind the attack, Devendra said, “I don’t think he was attacked because of any personal enmity. It looks like a case of robbery.”
“While the area has not witnessed any such incidents in the last four months, we are looking into the possibility that the suspects were involved in such cases in the past,” a police officer said.
