While models glided down the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in Ritu Kumars elegant creations, the footwear, three inch peep toes in fiercely original shades like sunshine yellow and matte gold, made their own impression. Nayantara Sood,27,a shoe designer who debuted at this fashion week with the show,is emerging as one of the young talents to watch out for. Soods handmade shoes,a complex blend of suede, satin, patent leather with jeweled detailing, are international enough to be worn anywhere, yet they have a quirky Indian touch. Priced at Rs 5000 onwards,Taramay, her label will be launched next month in design stores like Kimaya,Ogaan and Ensemble.
Shoes are an essential part of any couturiers collection. They have gone from being an after thought to a central style statement, says Sood, who spotted Kumar at Dilli Haat and sought an introduction through a common acquaintance. She liked my ideas and the next thing I know,I was finalising things with Amrish Kumar, her son and the creative director of the label, smiles Sood, who graduated from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi and went on to study footwear design at the London College of Fashion. After moving back to India she was looking for the right opportunities to market her shoes when the meeting with Kumar happened. Her designs are young and fun. I like the fact that she has a classic, yet elegant aesthetic sense, says Amrish.
Despite the generous praise,Sood on her part, has got her priorities set. Working with fashion designers really isnt my target, she says,I hope to make Taramay a high end domestic brand.
