The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a bail plea by Aruna Chadha, who along with former Haryana Minister Gopal Goyal Kanda is accused in the suicide case of airhostess Geetika Sharma.

“You are powerful people. We cannot let you out at this stage,” observed a bench of Justices H L Dattu and J S Khehar, while expressing its disinclination to allow the relief.

Senior advocate U U Lalit, appearing for Chadha, sought to convince the court by pointing out that she was a single mother, with elderly parents to look after. He also said Chadha had been in custody for more than eight months, while the prosecution was yet to frame penal charges in the matter.

“The petitioner is not the principal accused. She was herself an employee of Kanda. The only charge against her is that she took the victim to her doctor for termination of pregnancy. The petitioner’s last communication with the victim and her mother was 15 days before the incident,” Lalit contended. He further said Chadha had not been described as a prime accused in the two suicide notes, recovered after the incident.

“We know everything but our conscience says no,” remarked the bench, adding she will have to wait at least till the framing of charges for seeking any relief from the court.

Lalit then urged the court to adjourn the bail plea for two weeks so as to enable the trial court to frame the charges against her,if sufficient materials were found.

The bench however turned down the counsel’s submission, saying it might send “wrong signals” to the trial court.

Chadha’s counsel then asked the bench to let him withdraw the petition and the court ordered “the petition be dismissed as withdrawn”.

The Delhi High Court had in December refused to grant bail to Chadha, who worked in the now defunct MDLR Airlines, where Geetika too was an employee. She was arrested on August 8 last year and the trial court rejected her bail plea in October.

Kanda, owner of the airlines,is the prime accused in the case. In the suicide note,Geetika (23),accused Kanda and Chadha of harassing her and forcing her to kill herself. She died on the intervening night of August 4 and 5,2012,in her house in Delhi.

Charges of criminal intimidation and abetment to suicide were slapped on Kanda and Chadha. Both are now in judicial custody and have denied any involvement in the suicide.
