A group of armed men assaulted the staff members at a toll plaza on the Gurgaon-Pataudi Road on Monday night and looted Rs 1.85 lakh from the booth. Though police registered a case on Tuesday, the incident became public only on Thursday when the booth staff released CCTV footage of the assault and robbery to mediapersons.
According to toll booth staff, the incident took place between 7.30 pm and 8.15 pm on Monday.
Laxmikant Sharma, the in-charge of the toll plaza on the Gurgaon-Pataudi Road, said,Three men came on a Royal Enfield and stopped at the toll plaza. They got off their bike, walked up to me and slapped me without any provocation. A few minutes later, about 10 men came there in a black Scorpio with a red beacon. The men were carrying belts, sticks and an iron punch. They hit the guard,Prem Raj,till he fell bleeding. They then assaulted two other staff members, including the cashier Ravi. They stole about Rs 1.85 lakh from the daily shift collection and fled.
Sharma claimed when he called the police control room, they did not believe him. Police arrived at the toll booth 30 minutes later,Sharma said.
Police said they suspected the assault to be connected to an incident which took place in the afternoon the same day. A tractor was stopped by toll plaza operators and the driver was asked to pay a toll fee. Since the toll is only paid by commercial vehicles, the driver refused to pay. A heated argument ensued and the tractor finally passed through without paying the toll. The assault and loot in the night seem to be related to this, a police officer said.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Alok Mittal said,The men have been identified. They belong to Harsaru village near the toll plaza. Raids were conducted in nearby places. A case under IPC Sections 395 and 397 (dacoity and causing grievous injury) has been registered.
Police said the injured guard was admitted to Safdarjung hospital.
