Afghan man misses flight, assaults CISF staff at IGI Airport

A 25-year-old Afghan national was arrested for allegedly misbehaving with CISF personnel at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

A 25-year-old Afghan national was arrested for allegedly misbehaving with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The man allegedly tore the uniform of a CISF constable before attempting to snatch the gun of a CISF Inspector and attempting to run to the air side.

According to airport officials, the incident was reported a week ago when the Afghan man, identified as Ashmatullah Hashmi, was due to fly to Kabul. Sources said Hashmi, a student, was scheduled to board an Air India flight to Kabul which was scheduled to depart at 12.35 pm. However, due to technical reasons, the flight was delayed and rescheduled.

Sources said Hashmi, who was allegedly inebriated, fell asleep in the security hold area and missed the rescheduled flight. His check-in baggage had been offloaded by the airline by then.

“Suddenly, around 8 pm, he woke up and ran straight to the staff gate. There, he was stopped by a constable. Hashmi was trying to run to the air side and kept insisting on being allowed to pass. However, when the constable refused, Hashmi slapped him thrice, before tearing off his uniform. While the constable tried fighting him off, Hashmi assaulted him further. The control room had to be alerted,” a source at the airport said, adding that the incident was recorded on CCTV.
Immediately, a CISF Inspector, along with a team of constables, arrived at the spot and tried to stop Hashmi. But, he attacked the Inspector too and tried to steal his gun, sources said.

Eventually, he was overpowered and handed over to police, sources said.

Hashmi was taken to Safdarjung hospital along with the constable and the Inspector for a medical check up. Hashmi tested positive for alcohol, sources said.
