With the fate of the next government in Delhi hanging in the balance, the 28 prospective MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are unanimous on one thing: that they would be happy to sit in the Opposition. The party has upset all political calculations by winning 28 seats, depriving the BJP of a clear majority, and reducing the number of seats won by the Congress to a single-digit figure.
A majority of the 28 AAP legislators told Newsline that the ball was in the BJPs court to form a government, and they would be happy to sit in the Opposition. Dharmender Koli, who beat Veer Singh Dhingan and now sports a Main Hoon Vidhayak cap, said,We won because we promised honesty and transparency. It doesnt matter if we didnt get a majority, but to form a government now would be cheating the people. The BJP can do what it wants. Kolis sister Santosh Koli was originally the candidate from Seemapuri, but after she died in an accident,Dharmender was declared the candidate from the area.
Other AAP candidates who have won said forcing a re-election was a good option as the party would return even stronger. In this elections, some voters did not believe we could be a proper alternative. They either pressed the NOTA button or voted for the other two parties. Now,they know we are a force to reckon with and will vote for us. If there is a re-election,then we will definitely form the government, Veena Anand, the victorious Patel Nagar candidate, said.
Harish Khanna, who beat BJPs Rajni Abbi, said,We have been getting calls from unknown numbers, asking us to join other parties, but we are not entertaining any of these requests. They have tried to contact us individually and not at the party level. But there is no chance of any of us breaking away.
The candidate from Shakur Basti said he would not be surprised if the Congress and the BJP joined hands to form the government. On our part, there were some small problems on management on the last day. These were because of inexperience but,in a sense,it is good for us. We will learn so much in these five years if the BJP forms the government. And dont worry, parties such as the BJP have always found ways to wrest power, Satyendra Jain, who beat BSPs Shyam Lal Garg by 7,062 votes, said.
