arvind kejriwal, aam aadmi party, delhi cm Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The AAP government  has slashed power tariff by half and ordered supply of free water, in prompt fulfilment of two of the party’s key election promises.

Calling it an “important day” in lives of Delhi’s residents, deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced on Wednesday that electricity will be available to consumers using 400 units or less at half the charge and 20,000 litres of water per household will be supplied free every month. The new rates will start on March 1.

Starting April 1,  the subsidy will cost the state exchequer Rs 1,677 crore per annum.

After a cabinet meeting, Sisodia called upon people to use the electricity “judiciously”, and for good reason as there are riders attached to this bonanza.  If power consumption crosses 400 units, a consumer will have to pay for the entire number of units used, starting from 1.

There will be restrictions on free water too. Households using more than 20,000 litres will have to pay for the entire amount consumed.

The cheaper power is expected to cost Rs 1,427 crore, whereas free water will cost the government Rs 250 crore a year, beginning April 1.

For the month of March, the government will incur an expenditure of Rs 70 crore on power alone. Free water will cost Rs 20 crore in March.
Explaining the reduction, an official said that if a person gets a bill for 201 units, they will pay Rs 2 per unit for the first 200 and the full rate of Rs 2.97 for the last unit.

The relief in electricity bills will be provided to domestic consumers till the CAG audit of private power distribution companies (discoms) is completed. This will continue even in the eventuality of any tariff hike by the regulator, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission. The 50 per cent subsidy is likely to be in place irrespective of a possible hike.

Sisodia said this decision will benefit approximately 36 lakh families or approximately 90 per cent of domestic consumers.

On water, the deputy CM said, “We have given 20,000 litres of water free. Sewer charges would be waived off for these families as well. Last time, when we gave this subsidy,  13,31,000 families benefitted. Now that the number of meter connections has increased,  about 18 lakh families will benefit.”

The government is working on providing pipelines in every area, Sisodia said.

Group housing societies in areas such as Dwarka, Rohini or IP Extension will also benefit from the water subsidy.

What a monumental mistake. Delhi needs to improve distribution and supply. Delhi needs to fix electric wires hanging all over. Distribution of water supply. All this needs money. In fact the rates should have been increased. Pilferage stopped. Delhi could do with a few toilets in the city. Delhi needs to spend money in controlling monkeys, dogs and cows roaming the high ways. Kejriwal has no intentions of making Delhi world cl city. He will reduce it to a bigger slum. Good luck Delhites, you are out of luck. Last but not the least pollution needs to be controlled. He is himself suffering from asthma. Let others get it too.

Just Delhites? What about MUMBAI... The city that generates HIGHEST Income Tax for the Government? The Maharashtra Government is Charging exorbitantly for power... primarily because it can't manage distribution & losses are high. Delhi ALWAYS enjo lower prices... fuel, electricity, taxes.. NOW this subsidy.. Why can't there by uniformity & judicious distribution & charges?

To all Delhites who do not agree with AAP: If you are in Delhi, then please write to the Delhi Govt that you do not concur with the approach and tell them that you do not want any subsidy! Will you do that, please? I request all Delhites who do not agree with AAP's ways to sign a peion, in revolt, that they do not want any subsidy from AAPtards!

Of all Govt. spending only 10 - 20% reaches ground....dat means straight 80% going to corrupts......If AAP can save even 50% of that black money, it would far outweigh the amount of subsidies doled out a service to the lowest strata of our society. Kejri is an ex- revenue official. one can safely presume that he would have already calculated all this... so stop hoolaah and give him some time to perform.

This how someone can create a new corruption regime. If some one use 400 units say (410 units), he just need to ask meter reading taker to take 100 Rs and take reading till 400 units. He can take care in next month unit or continue the same till he want to pay in bulk for month. It is clear case of disturbed mind decision.

All gentle people who are opposing the slashed power and water tariff for a certain usage - that subsidy is so regressive, and it will not benefit. Please add one last line in your comments - "Yes, I will not take Gas subsidy from now on" Then you are not mere speaking but your intent and spirit is also reflecting and put credibility in your argument.

S C - your comments are regressive. Govt should not be generating jobs at tax payers money. Tax payers should be empowered to generate jobs and drive economy. By regulating the water and electric charges tax payers will end saving more money and hence have more income to spend which in turn have positive impact on GDP. The running cost of firms may also improve which will improve their profitability and this drive hiring and control inflation. On the other hand water and electricity are free or cheap to certain level of consumption, after that charges can be 100 percent. This would incentivise people to be conservative in their consumptions which is also good from resource management point of view. So please think again before reacting negatively or regressively. Thanks.

Modi Style: Taxpayers money goes to Govt. and Corporates. Kejriwal Style: Taxpayers money goes back to Tax payers and poor in form of facilities. Congress Style: Taxpayers money goes to Politicians and Corporates. Now decide who is doing better job, i know its Modi only who can do better job becuase he is Modi. isn't it?
