AAP govt has not released funds to MCDs, claims BJP

The AAP said that this was a BJP bid to divert attention from real issues and spread falsehoods.

As the strike called by municipal safaikaramcharis entered its second day on Saturday, mounds of garbage were again at the centre of political barbs exchanged between the Delhi BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

While the Delhi BJP blamed the AAP government for failing to release funds to the cash-strapped MCDs, the AAP has claimed that the infighting between the BJP-controlled central government departments and the MCDs had led to the crisis.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had clarified on Friday that the Delhi government had, in fact, released more funds to MCDs by October than what the corporations received by the same time in 2014, during President’s rule in the capital.

According to the AAP, compared to the corresponding period in 2014, the Delhi government had so far released 75 percent of the funds earmarked for the current financial year to the North MCD, 69 percent to the South MCD and 64 percent to East MCD.

“It is a matter of grave concern that the BJP-ruled central government, which also controls the three MCDs of Delhi, is pushing the national capital towards civic chaos. The central government-controlled DDA owes Rs 1,550 crore to the three MCDs, which is one of the major reasons, apart from financial corruption in the MCDs, for their financial crisis,” the AAP said.

Meanwhile, the BJP said that due to the lack of finances, the sanitation services of MCDs were on the verge of collapse. “The Delhi government is busy playing politics like they did earlier over the wages of the sanitation workers. If the AAP government had any real concern for SC/ST welfare, they would have assured proper finances to MCDs which would have ensured timely salaries to the sanitation workers” the Delhi BJP said.
