Six men were arrested by the Special Cell on the charge attempting to extort Rs 5 crore from a Delhi-based businessman. His partner was one of those arrested.

Vikas Sharma (39),a real estate developer who operates through B V Builders in Neemrana,Rajasthan, was arrested along with associates Sanjay (31),Naveen (21),Ramkesh (20),Sanjay Jain (40) and Vinay Jain (42). They wanted to settle scores with Vikas Jain’s estranged financier-cum-partner,police said.

“On March 9,Mukesh Aggarwal, who lives in East Delhi’s Ram Vihar, received a call with the caller demanding Rs 5 crore and threatening to kill him if he failed to pay up within three days” DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said.

Police said,a team was formed to trace the criminals making the threat. Aggarwal received another call, where the caller told him that he had received orders from “bhai” to kill him if the payment was not made, police said.

Police later received information that persons from Jind in Harayana were behind the extortion calls. Raids were conducted and Ramkesh, who police traced to Outer Delhi’s Narela, was arrested.

“We recovered some incriminating documents from him. When questioned,Ramkesh revealed that one Naveen had promised to give him a share of the money extorted from Aggarwal. Naveen,a property dealer in Jind, has also been arrested,” Yadav said.

Naveen told police that he had procured the SIM cards used to make the threat calls,at the instance of one Sanjay from Rohtak.

The three,Ramkesh,Naveen,Sanjay, were arrested on April 3. During questioning, they told police that brothers Sanjay Jain and Vinay Jain were the masterminds of the extortion attempt. On April 6,both the Jains, too, were arrested.

“Vinay Jain had had a business dispute with his partner Aggarwal. Jain had expressed his concern to his brother Sanjay Jain, who then roped in Sanjay, gave him Rs 30,000 for expenses and discussed the conspiracy in detail at a luxury resort in Behrore,Rajasthan,” Yadav said.

Once the plan was finalised,Sanjay Jain left for China to create an alibi and directed Sanjay, who roped in other associates to execute the plan.

On March 9,Sanjay went to Bahadurgarh from where he made the first extortion call. Thereafter, according to the plan, two more threat calls were made.

When Aggarwal sought some time to arrange the payment,Sanjay Jain directed Sanjay to do a recce of Aggarwal’s house so that they could scare him by talking about topography of the area and giving him the impression of being under watch. Sanjay Jain was apprehended at IGI Airport, after his arrival from China,Yadav said.
