A 27-year-old man wanted in three criminal cases was gunned down in an encounter on Monday afternoon in Narela,Outer Delhi. The man had allegedly stolen a car from the driver of a property dealer, who was waiting for his employer’s son outside a school in Rohini. One of the police constables who gave chase and tried to nab the man,was shot his right leg.

The incident, police said, was reported around 2.15 pm when the Bhuvan, the driver of a property dealer based in Bhalswa Dairy, was waiting for his employer’s son outside Sachdeva School in Sector 13,Rohini. The man,who was killed in the encounter, has been identified as Amit Dahiya,a resident of Haryana. He was accompanied by an accomplice, who managed to flee.

Police said around 2.15 pm,one of the accused got into the passenger seat and put a pistol to Bhuvan’s head. He threatened to kill Bhuvan,if he didn’t give his keys and leave. Scared,Bhuvan handed over the keys of the Ford Endeavour and fled. The two accused then drove off to Narela.

By then, police said,Bhuvan made a PCR call and informed his employer as well.

Immediately,a message was flashed across districts on the wireless informing personnel about the stolen white Ford Endeavour.

Two constables,Baljit Singh Chahal and A S Bohara of the Narela police station, were checking vehicles at a picket in Ghogha crossing when they spotted the stolen car. Since the car did not have a number plate, the constables gave chase in a private vehicle.

However, police said, after speeding for a few minutes, the driver of the stolen car lost control and hit a wall in Sannoth village.

There, the constables surrounded the accused. The constables asked them to get out of the car. However,Amit, who was driving the vehicle, opened fire. Constable Baljeet Singh Chahal sustained a bullet injury in the thigh. The policeman fired at Amit, who was later taken to Maharshi Balmiki hospital in Pooth Khurd in Delhi, where he was declared dead on arrival. Amit’s accomplice managed to flee.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sanjay Kumar said: “A manhunt has been launched to nab the accomplice. The Ford Endeavour,a country-made pistol with five live rounds, and two empty cartridges of 7.62 mm caliber have been recovered.”

Police said Amit was wanted in two cases of robbery and dacoity in Narela in 2008 and in a case of murder registered in Sonepat this year.
