Twenty-five people were arrested during the 14-day India International Trade Fair (IITF) at Pragati Maidan on charges of theft and molestation, Delhi Police said on Sunday. Nine of them, including seven women, were arrested on Saturday and Sunday, the last two days.
“With the help of surveillance by special staff and intense patrolling”, the police said it brought down the number of reported theft cases from 280 in 2015 to 140 this year. Fourteen people were arrested last year.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Kumar Gyanesh, who was also looking after the security arrangement at IITF, told The Indian Express that in most of the cases, women were caught stealing articles from the stalls. “We had made special arrangements to keep a tab on suspicious persons. Our female staff was also on duty in civil uniform.”
“A mother and daughter duo were among those arrested for stealing articles from the stalls. We also busted a gang of pick pockets. The 25 arrested are in judicial custody,” he added. A large number of stolen articles, including mobile phones and cash, were also recovered.
